Orthopedic surgery is a specialized branch of surgery that deals with the study and treatment of diseases of the skeletal and musculoskeletal system. These diseases can affect the bones, cartilage structures, or joints.
Orthopedic surgery has always included traumatology, an increasingly interdisciplinary and complex field for the treatment of major trauma to the skeletal system, but closely related to all branches of emergency medicine.

Traumatology | Osteomyelitis diabetic foot

In the field of traumatology and in the surgical treatment of diabetic foot and osteomyelitis, synthetic or alloplastic bone substitutes have been used for some time. These fall within the field of biomaterials and their ultimate goal is bone regeneration.
Today, the most commonly used materials for this purpose are ceramics such as hydroxyapatite and calcium phosphates (which have the same structure as the mineral component of bone), composites such as polylactic acid, and metals.

BONESUPPORT

CERAMENT®

is a product with a unique composition, patented following an experimental thesis by the Swedish company BoneSupport. Thanks to its resistance and resorbability, it provides one of the best means of filling bone voids currently available on the market.

The antibiotic-containing versions, with Gentamicin or Vancomycin, in addition to having all the structural characteristics of BVF, are useful in preventing and treating the colonization of the surgical site by microorganisms and thus protecting the bone healing process, thanks to the local elution of the antibiotic.

The BoneSupport portfolio we market includes three types of products:

  • Cerament BONE VOID FILLER is a resorbable ceramic bone graft substitute designed to fill cavities and voids in the skeletal system in order to promote bone regeneration. Cerament BVF fills bone cavities and voids, providing valuable secondary structural support to synthetic materials during surgical procedures.
  • Cerament G – with Gentamicin
  • Cerament V – with Vancomycin

Orthopedics | Regenerative medicine

In particular, regenerative medicine deals with repairing, regenerating, or replacing tissues or organs damaged by disease, trauma, or due to birth defects (congenital) or aging.
Regenerative medicine is a new frontier in medicine, extremely innovative and in step with scientific progress. It draws on contributions from multiple disciplines such as biology, chemistry, medicine, computer science, and engineering to resolve many acute and chronic diseases for which conventional medicine has proven inadequate.
A major impetus for the development of this new approach to medicine has undoubtedly come, on the one hand, from the achievements of engineering and nanotechnology applied to biomedicine and, on the other, from studies on the use of stem cells, special multipotent cells that, under appropriate conditions, are capable of regenerating tissues and organs.
Depending on the field of application, regenerative medicine includes:
  • tissue engineering
  • cell and gene therapy
  • medical devices
  • artificial organs

LIPOGEMS®

Tissue processing takes place in a closed-loop system and in a single surgical procedure; the result is minimally manipulated tissue that can be used to repair, restore, or replace damaged tissue.

HARVESTING

This phase can be performed under general or local anesthesia. After infiltrating a solution composed of saline, adrenaline, and lidocaine, the adipose tissue is harvested. Both procedures are performed using a series of blunt-tipped cannulas connected to Luerlock® syringes contained in the kit.

PROCESSING

The harvested tissue is processed immediately in the operating room using the LIPOGEMS® system. This phase allows for a gradual reduction of the fat clusters until a particularly fluid product is obtained, free of pro-inflammatory oily and bloody components.

TRANSPLANT

Once processing is complete, the tissue is removed from the device and immediately transferred to the site of interest.
